  In 1979 he graduated with M.A. from National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts, film studies. From 1978 to 1984 he worked in Bulgarian National Film Archives. Then he started his scientific career in the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Art Studies – Ph.D. (1988), Assoc. Prof. (1995), D.Sc. (2005) and Prof. (2008). From 2004 he is a Director of the Institute. Has been a lecturer in NATFA (since 1989), New Bulgarian University (since 1995) and Sofia University (since 2008). From 2002 to 2007 he was a Chairman of the Guild of Bulgarian Film Critics. He was member of the international juries at numerous film and television festivals. In 2007 he became a member of the European Film Academy. He is a Chairman of the National Cinema Council (from 2010). In the period 2004-2007 he was a Deputy Chairman of the Council. His books are «Bulgarian cinema. Encyclopedia» (2000) and «Cinema.bg» (2003).
